On the second Wednesday of every month Richmond Centre Mall invites their 55+ customers to enjoy a free movie at the Richmond Centre Famous Players. Admission is free with a non-perishable food donation for the Richmond Food Bank. The doors open at 10:00 am with complimentary coffee and the movie begins at 11:00 am. Thanks Jennifer, Leslie and Richmond Centre Mall. Upcoming films.

International Year of the Potato

Thanks to local farmers, a nutritious food that is always available at the Richmond Food Bank is the noble potato, celebrated this "Year of the Potato".

The celebration of the International Year of the Potato (IYP) will raise awareness of the importance of the potato - and of agriculture in general - in addressing issues of global concern, including hunger, poverty and threats to the environment www.potato2008.org.

Past Events

Richmond Chinatown Lions Club "LIONS for Cool-Aid" Gala Fundraising Dinner and Dance

Richmond Chinatown Lions Club held a Gala Fundraising Dinner and Dance to benefit the Richmond Food Bank. The Lions’ commitment to pay the cost of a cooler and other renovations will enable the food bank to maximize the utility of its new larger and more central space, including a program to distribute milk, cheese, and eggs to children and nursing mothers who need the food bank. (Also see our Thanks page.)

Earth Day at King George Park

The third annual East Richmond Community Earth Day Celebration was held at King George Park on April 19, 2008 to celebrate International Earth Day. There was live entertainment, children's activities, and a fundraising barbeque with proceeds donated to the foodbank.

Canstruction 2008 - Canada Place and Richmond Centre Mall

Team Richmond's tin food sculpture was built at Canada Place over 2 days in late February where it was on display for a week, with sculptures from other teams.

It was then dismantled and reassembled at the Richmond Centre Mall's Sears Court where it was on display for 2 weeks before being deCANstructed and brought to the Richmond Food Bank.

Canstruction is held continent-wide each year to raise awareness, money and food for local food banks. The Vancouver event is organized by the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and drew 21 teams who built some great sculptures.

Thanks everyone who made this a fun, rewarding event once again; especially the main players Will, Leslie, Ronn & Nicki.

Here are pictures from our entry this year (or click the icon) and our our entries from previous years.

Congratulations Unit 284!

We are delighted that the Richmond Food Bank's dear and longtime friends the Army Navy & Airforce Veterans Unit 284 have been recognized for their outstanding work in the community. They received the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award for Association of the Year 2007 at awards held on October 17th.

We are also pleased to announce that the Richmond Food Bank was recognized as a finalist, along with Richmond Rotary Club.

Unit 284 has been significant in keeping the Richmond Food Bank alive through some lean times. We extend our best wishes to the club in its many endeavours - particularly their affordable housing project.

Open House at our new location - 15 Sep 2007

Our Open House was a lively and successful event, thanks to the participation of many people:

Richmond Food Bank volunteers, board members, and staff who cleaned and set up, served refreshments, greeted guests and gave tours, and cleaned and reset after the event.

The food was terrific, thanks to Chef Ian Lai and his students from the Northwest School of Culinary Arts.

The music was perfect, thanks to Troubador Greg Meloche.

Several local individuals and businesses donated lovely draw prizes.

We estimate there were about 150 visitors, including supporters, local dignitaries, groups who made (very generous) cheque presentations, partner agencies, and people who learned about our event from publicity in our local newspapers.

There were many congratulations for having moved into this more central location and for accomplishing our move without interrupting service to our neighbours in need. Your hard work and generosity made this possible. (Pictures)
