AS THE SUMMER SUN FADES, THE NEED ENDURES

When times are tough, the number of families who need help increases dramatically.  The Richmond Food Bank has seen a 50% increase in the past 8 months.  To counter this alarming situation, individuals, corporations, and organizations have been generous in their efforts to support the Food Bank in this difficult economic climate.

“The summer harvesting season is coming to a close, so fresh vegetables are more expensive and less plentiful,” says Alex Nixon, Coordinator of Volunteers & Operations, “and with the increased need for our services, our food stocks are rapidly diminishing.”

Mr. Nixon notes that the level of need has carried over from the summer.  “The change of season hasn’t brought a change in status.  We’re still serving an average of 440 households in a week.  It’s thanks to the many people and organizations who donated so generously over the summer that we have remained open to serve.  I just hope that the generosity remains warm as the weather gets cold.”

Despite the increased need for their services, the Richmond Food Bank does not solicit door-to-door for donations.  “We do not solicit door-to door.  The best way to donate to the Food Bank is to donate directly to us,” says Mr Nixon.  The most needed foods are tinned fish, brown beans, and hearty soups.

“Donations by cheque, credit card, and online at www.richmondfoodbank.org  allow us to buy food as we need it to assemble nutritionally balanced grocery bags, and donors receive a tax receipt.  So it’s a win-win for the food bank and donors.”
